Yoneori Cartonnage
Yamagata, Japan

I create boxes using Yoneori — the traditional woven textile of my hometown, Yonezawa in Yamagata Prefecture.

The auspicious patterns of Yoneori carry centuries of craft heritage, and their soft texture brings quiet elegance to daily life.

Through Yoneori Cartonnage, I create living objects from the textiles I love.
I am drawn to making things that hold quiet beauty, and to materials
that can one day return to the earth.

What is Yoneori Cartonnage? About the Craft

Cartonnage is a traditional French craft of constructing boxes and decorative objects from layered cardboard. At Madomaru, this technique is united with Yoneori — the fine woven cotton of Yonezawa — to bring the beauty of Japanese textile into the form of everyday objects.
